Solve anagrams with your own word list

Some puzzles have their own vocabulary. Give the solver your shortlist and it will check only those candidates.

Match a phrase in four steps

  1. Open the anagram solver and enter THE EYES.
  2. Expand Use your own word list and enable Search only my list.
  3. Paste the sample below, with one candidate per line.
  4. Select Exact anagrams and choose Find my words.

THEY SEE and THE EYES match exactly. EYES is too short for exact mode. THESE EYES needs letters that the input does not supply. Switch to All possible words and EYES becomes a match as well. Spaces do not count toward the length filter: THEY SEE has seven letters.

This feature checks phrases you already have. It does not split a dictionary into combinations or invent anagrams of a person's name. If you paste a list of single words, you get matching single words. A phrase must appear on its own line before the solver can return it.

Prepare a useful list

Use one word or phrase per line in a plain text file. A newline separates candidates; a comma does not. If your source is a spreadsheet, copy one column of candidate text without its heading. Do not include scores, definitions or line numbers beside the words.

English A–Z letters are supported. The solver ignores spaces, straight apostrophes and hyphens when comparing letter counts, but preserves the candidate's wording in results. It collapses extra spaces for readability. It skips candidates containing other symbols, non-English letters, or more than 40 letters and shows the skipped count after searching.

Blank lines are ignored. Identical entries are deduplicated without regard to case. Separate spellings that happen to have the same letters remain separate candidates: SILENT and LISTEN are not duplicates. Names and fictional words are allowed in your list because you supply the vocabulary; the solver does not claim they appear in the default dictionary.

Import a text file

Choose Import .txt file and select a UTF-8 text file. The maximum size is 4 MB and the maximum list length is 200,000 lines. Importing fills the text area and enables your list. Review the contents, enter your letters, then run the search.

A file saved as a different encoding may be rejected. Open it in a text editor and save a UTF-8 copy. A PDF, word-processing document or compressed archive is not a word list. Renaming its extension to .txt does not convert it. Start with a small sample if you are unsure about the format.

If an import fails, the tool keeps the text that was already in the box. You can correct it or turn off Search only my list to return to ENABLE. If every nonempty candidate is unsupported, the solver explains that there are no usable entries rather than reporting a successful search with zero matches.

Keep the scope intentional

A narrow list can be useful for a themed puzzle, a shortlist of answers or names you already know. For example, you could provide the possible place names mentioned in a book, then test which one fits a clue. The answer means “this candidate has the required letters,” not “this candidate is the correct solution to the clue.” Meaning and puzzle rules still matter.

This approach responds to a community request for an anagram solver with a custom phrase dictionary. The person described having hundreds of possible phrases and wanting to test that list. Their question is an example of the task, not a claim that they use this site.

What stays private

The browser reads your selected file and compares the letters on your device. We do not upload the file, text area, input letters or result list. Custom entries live in the current tab and disappear on reload. Copy or export any results you want to keep, and keep your original source list.

For custom-list results, Share solution offers a PNG download showing your input letters and up to eight matching entries. Review the image before sending it. There is no custom-list solution link. The image does not attach your source file; any matching entries shown are visible to the recipient. A recipient needs their own copy of that list to repeat the search. Basic usage analytics record events such as choosing a custom list, but never its contents. See Privacy & analytics for the browser-level switch.

Check the result independently

For an exact match, remove the supported separators from both strings and compare how many times each letter appears. For a shorter match, each candidate letter count must be no greater than the input count. This simple check works just as well for a two-word phrase as for a single word.
